photo quality make-up tips for senior portraits

+ This post is written by [Jenny Bowker] a professional makeup artist located in Seattle, WA.

Jenny works on fashion, senior portraits and brides, but if your senior portrait photographer does not offer makeup application, here are some good tips to prepare yourself for photo day (or ANY day for that matter!!)

Getting your picture taken is fun, but can also be stressful! What to wear? How to pose? Wait, is my regular makeup going to look good?! Photo quality makeup IS different than regular makeup because of lighting, and because photos can wash you out and make you look pale, or highlight flaws if you’re not careful. Not to worry! Achieving a beautiful, natural look in photos is simple and easy, and these tips work on a regular day too!

+ A week before: Brighten your smile!
1) Using diluted Hydrogen Peroxide as a mouthwash will whiten teeth gently- it’s the main ingredient in most whitening strips, washes and pastes.

+ The night before: Prep your skin!
1) Smooth skin with a homemade scrub, mix Baker’s Sugar with Extra Virgin Olive Oil and smooth over face, cleanse and moisturize as usual.
2) Gently massage lips with a damp washcloth to remove flakes, and immediately apply Pure Vitamin E Oil for plump lips in the AM.

+ The day of: Get ready to glow!
1) Even out skin tone with a medium coverage foundation with a matte finish, shine is intensified in pictures, especially indoors.
[Estee Lauder Double Wear Light Foundation]
2) Apply a primer around the entire eye area to brighten dark circles and keep your eyeshadows on all day. [Benefit Stay Don't Stray Primer]
3) Apply a golden brown shadow to lash lines to define eyes and brighten any eye color. [MAC Omega Shadow]
4) Pearly powder applied to tear ducts, brow bones and cheekbones gives a soft focus glow. [NARS Albatross Highlighter]
5) Volumizing mascara creates a flirty look with each blink! [Rimmel The Max Volume Flash]
6) Blush, blush, blush! Layer on a peachy pink- photos wash out colors, make sure you’re rosy! [NARS Amour]
7) Keep applying lipgloss throughout your shoot to keep your lips poppin’! [MAC Lipglass in Lovechild]

And remember- Smile!!

Carissa - I love these tips :) I’m having my senior pictures done in a few days and these are BEYOND helpful. I was really unsure about how to do my makeup because this is totally different from how I do it on a day-to-day basis. :)
